Positive: We recently stayed at River Shack and overall had a really lovely time, but there are a few things worth mentioning for future guests. The house itself is modern, spacious and beautifully positioned right on the water. The location is fantastic and only about a 5-minute drive to the beach, which made it a great base for our stay. The bathrooms deserve a special mention — large, stylish with great water pressure and showers that feel a little luxurious. The hot tub was a lovely addition, and a real treat, and the house was well equipped with everything you could need.

Negative: That said, a few things did take away from the experience. The 4pm check-in and 10am check-out felt quite restrictive and almost like losing an entire day, and our request for an earlier check-in wasn’t responded to. The beds were unfortunately not very comfortable and each guest in every bedroom had the same complaint. There was a small ant problem in the kitchen, nothing major and not enough to deter us from staying again, but worth noting. Also, no fencing and neighbouring properties have dogs that roam the yard, so if you’re bringing your own pet this is something to be aware of. One of the bigger frustrations was with the BBQ. The property advertises two gas bottles supplied, however when we went to use it both bottles were empty. When we contacted the host, the response implied that if two bottles had been used we were responsible for replacing them despite us only using the BBQ once and not prior to discovering they were empty. We ended up paying $38 at the local petrol station to replace one bottle (Highway robbery prices!) with no apology or offer of compensation, which was disappointing. Bin instructions were also unclear. There was no mention in the guest book about bin nights, so I had to Google it myself. When we arrived the bins were already half full, and guests are warned about hefty fees if bins overflow and rubbish isnt taken with you on departure, which doesn’t feel fair when bins aren’t empty on arrival. We were contacted on the wrong day as a 'reminder' about putting the bins out, when they had already been emptied prior which suggests the property management isn’t fully across their own schedule. We also received a missed call at 8pm one night with no voicemail, message or follow-up, which was a bit strange? I still have no idea why they had attempted to make contact. 0On the morning of departure, the sprinklers turned on at 7:30am and covered the entire yard, making packing the car quite inconvenient.

Summary: Beautiful Shack, Slightly complicated stay.
